Holocaust Collection

Sam Migdalek, Escape and Punishment, c. 1995, 92 x 122cm, acrylic on canvas. From the Cunningham Dax Collection.

In 2007 The Dax Centre began a collaborative project with the guidance of the Jewish Holocaust Centre.  This collection contains over 100 artworks made by survivors, child survivors and children of survivors of the Holocaust.

The lengthy interviews conducted with the people who donated their works brought to light the emotional and psychological impact that the Holocaust continues to have on the lives of survivor families.  This collection highlights the intergenerational effects that the Holocaust continues to exert on our society.

The drawings, paintings, textiles and sculptures in the Holocaust Collection embody terrible memories, enduring pain and unspeakable loss.  These artworks come from a place of darkness yet they also carry messages of strength, hope and endurance.
